While I was searching for her papers in the desk, I came upon a most unusual thing. It was a foot, not yours or mine, but small, about two inches long made of stone. The appendage supported six toes, brown in color with swirls of black edging it. As I laid it flat, I noticed it contained a depression in the center.
What was odd about finding this unique item was not the 'foot' itself, but what was underneath. A small folded piece of paper was stuck to the bottom. I opened it up to read "16-A-24."
Why did Carol place this paper with those numbers hidden in this fashion? Could it be a lock combination, or something different?
She had to drive to the hospital yesterday to see how her husband was doing. Did this note have anything to do with that? I know now what she meant. If you take the highway to 16th Street, then to Avenue A, and from there turn onto 24th Street, you will arrive at the hospital. Carol doesn't go downtown often. This was her way of remembering.
