My Writings

Picture
When I starting writing my stories, I found I had to set up a foundation for my characters. First, I joined a book club that helps its members write and guides toward publication. If you don't read much, do it. Soon you will  find out how the authors construct their sentences and story line. I then took a short  class on writing from coursersa.org - great instruction and it was free.
I have been wanting to write a good story for some time but just didn't have the right subject or focus.  My first book, Similar But Not the Same, helped me focus on ideas and how to solve them. I decided to write science fiction mysteries because there would not be anyone in the book I knew in real life.  I love reading mysteries that present a puzzle. I have watched hundreds of movies, read just as many books, and enjoyed group field trips to understand how characters would act. Research was easy,  the internet is a bounty of technical information. I have always been interested in Mars along with the other planets in our solar system. The picture here is of Galle Crater or better known as 'Happy Face' crater on Mars. For all intents and purposes, I will use this crater as the home background for my sci-fi stories.
There  are questions we all ask ourselves when it comes to the universe and  what  could be out there. Would the people be like us, would they aspire to the  same needs, or will they be something quite different? Isaac Asimov used a theme in some of his stories about how we should expand into the universe not only to reduce our Earthly population but to save ourselves in case of natural or man made disasters.

I found this picture on the internet and since it relates closely to my first book. I  thought I would share it with you here. There are three themes in Similar, the age old conflict between men and women, our social mindset that could be in the future, and how we will be living on the Moon and Mars 300 years from now. Evolution played a large part in our development, why not the same for other people in the universe. If a dominate species developed into a similar primate form such as ours, it is possible that it could happen elsewhere. What if we encountered people from another solar system that looks similar to us, but are different in their outlook toward politics, religion and sex?   I described these alien people in my book to be completely opposite of humans, with the exception of their appearance, and how we view ourselves socially and politically. Would we discard our morals, traditions, and liberties to make our lives easier?
This story making process became an adventure for me, and that is all it is just a story. Like a giant jigsaw puzzle, you place scenarios in certain positions, you look up synonyms for words to make the narrative sound better, and you research specific details to make the scenes accurate. You may not like all of the subject matter, but that is not as important as describing a fictional story from thought and making sure it flows easily from one chapter to the next - fitting just like a puzzle when it is finished.
My books fit together in a series I call Domino just because as in life one occurrence always affects something else. i.e. a domino effect.

Acknowlegements
This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and
incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a
fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual
  events is purely coincidental
I will add that some ideas stated in my book you may not agree with. This was just
an exercise in writing. In order to make this story work, my characters said what had
to be said. Remember this is just a story.

I want to thank all the people that I have encountered that gave me support to
try my hand at writing. My sister, Shirley, my book club members, and my friends and readers, Sue, Christie, and Nancy F.
