- I never wore my mother's winter coat or anything from my family because I was the oldest and my mother was three sizes greater than me. She made all my clothes and handed them down to my sister. I do remember the time mom took me shopping for a new coat. Even though I was seventeen at the time, this was back in the day children didn't get to decide on what they were going to wear.
After several try-ons and looking at price tags, my mother chose a bluish gray plaid coat. It was ugly but because we were both tired, I said yes. At that age, I felt older women might have liked the coat, but I didn't. The outfit had two inch buttons down the front, a six inch wide collar, and it really wasn't that warm.
By the time I married, I gave the coat to goodwill. At twenty-two, I felt some mother somewhere can make their child as miserable as I was.
Today, I might buy that coat since I'm a lot older and my mother is no longer living.©A. Nation2016
