The doorbell rang. I had to put down my linen I had just folded from the wash and headed for the front door. Who could it be? I thought to myself.
I opened the front door and saw the UPS man hi-tailing back to his truck. There on the step before me was a brown sealed box with my name on it I picked it up and brought the box to the kitchen table where my husband, Howard, was still reading the newspaper.
"Howard, did you order anything? I noticed it wasn't too heavy.
"No, did you?" he asked.
"No I didn't. Where's a knife?" I reached into the silverware drawer and pulled out a sharp knife to cut the strapping tape. Inside was a note. It read, "I have your son, use the contents and you will find him."
"What's inside?" Howard asked.
"A jar of honey, a hacksaw and some spectacles."
"What else does the note say?"
"Nothing more. We should check with his roommate to see if he knows something about this."
Bob, my son, was at college now and at the age of 19, anything can happen. We called and Steve his roommate answered.
"No, he's not here. In fact he hadn't shown up all night."
We were worried.
"Let's take this box of stuff to the police," my husband suggested.
The officer at the station looked inside and around the box. "I can't determine anything from this. Maybe it's a prank."
"My son does not make pranks," I protested.
