"Do you know that man down at the end of the counter?"
"No, please, I have to go or he'll see me talking to you."
"Alright, but here is my card," he said folding the tip money around it and sliding it towards her across the table. She reached down and picked it up to place it in her apron pocket.
The detective walked over toward the counter to get a good look at the man who was drinking a cup of coffee.
Then Alex left the restaurant and headed for his car when someone came up to him from behind poking the officer in the ribs.
"Stay away from here," said the whispering voice in his ear.
"I just came in for coffee. What's your problem mister?"
"Bad things could happen if you continue to talk to my friends."
"No problem," the detective said as he turned around fast and twisted until the man fell to the ground. The officer didn't see a weapon.
