“This here is your guard dog, for the lady.” Frank explained peering into the house.
“Oh, come on in,” then looking at the dog, “is it housebroke?” Alex asked.
“Uh, no, I’ll tie him up out here.” Frank wrapped the rope around one of the porch supports and trailed into the house behind Alex.
Jan was sitting on the couch when the two men entered the main room.
“Jan,” Alex began, “This is an old friend of mine, Frank Wolf.”
“Frank,” she acknowledged nodding her head. Alex turned toward Frank and offered his school chum one of the chairs at the table.
“So Frank, what brings you by here? I don’t need anyone for Jan until tomorrow?”
“I brought that dog out here to help. He’s not much of an attack dog, but he sure loves to bark a lot at anythin’ movin’.”
“A dog?” Jan leaned forward. “I have never taken care of a dog. Where is it?” Her curiosity was mounting fast.
“He’s out on the porch,” Frank replied getting up and walking toward the door. Jan and Alex followed close behind.
There on the porch was this hairy mongrel panting, drool dripping, and shaggy tail wagging back and forth so hard it made the whole dog’s body shake.
“Oh,” Jan said with caution, “He’s big,” was all Jan could say.
“What kind of dog is he Frank?” Alex asked smiling because he knew about his friend’s dog raising abilities or lack of one.
“Well, somewhere he’s got Blue Heeler, some shepherd, some wolfhound I think, and maybe a pointer or two.”
Everyone at that moment started laughing while the dog just sat there taking these happy humans all in. Suddenly he barked, loud.
“Whoa, that’s a loud one,” Alex exclaimed, “What’s his name?”
“Ralph, I named him after my granddad ‘cause he had a loud bark too.”
Jan couldn’t contain the snicker that was creeping up through her throat. She covered her mouth with her right hand to keep the laughter from getting out, but it was too late. “HooHaaHaa, oh this is too much,” Jan giggled wiping the tears from her eyes. She then moved over to the animal and scratched behind his matted ears.
“He needs a bath Frank,” Jan stated staring back at Alex’s scruffy friend. Her statement made Frank startled, like she wanted him to do it.
